An abscess, much like it does for us humans, refers to a collection of pus that forms under the skin. They are most commonly caused by cat fights - cats naturally have a lot of bacteria in their mouth, which is easily transferred into wounds, causing an infection. Left untreated, this infection can (and usually will) turn into an abscess.
